The Donnybrook Apple Festival 2001

A complete change was planned for the 2001 festival. The committee under president Tim Sheehan and co-ordinator, Judy Byatt decided to hold the festival in the newly refurbished main street and hold it over two days. It was advertised as a 'Free Festival' as it would be impossible to charge admission to the main street. To celebrate its Irish origins Donnybrook went green for the occasion with Irish music and dance provided by Fling, Kavanagh Irish Dancers, Green Jacket, John Wilson, The Irish Band and Reel to Reel. The Collie Pipe Band also added to the festival atmosphere.

The Henty Riding Group put a free 'Show Horse and Dressage Extravaganza' at Egan Park on the Saturday. A display by the Australind Art Group was held in the old Country Life Emporium building with entertainment and activities all along the main street. Sunday saw the South Western Highway closed between 9am and 5pm with traffic being diverted via Collins Street.

The Hotham Valley train arrived and the newly elected M.L.A., Mick Murray opened the Festival at lunchtime. He then cut a ribbon at the Ayers Garden Rotunda to open this Centenary of Foundation project, which was part of the main street beautification. The Rotunda, the Railway platform and an area in the vicinity of the doctor's surgery was used to stage the singers and dancers.   (Courtesy of Doug Henderson's book "Apple Queens & Festivals")
