The Donnybrook Apple Festival 1987

Ian Atkinson took over the chairmanship of the 1987 Apple Festival and was the first non-Apexian to be chairman since Apex revived the festival in 1979. The committee this year consisted of Joe Licciardello from the Fruitgrowers Association, Peter Cutrono from Apex, Joan Hetherington from the Asthma Foundation, Graham Morrison from the Tourist Bureau and Les Young from Lions. Rotary had Chairman Ian, Treasurer Greg Thomas with Ross Burrows, Ron Ellard, Rod Connaughton and Glen Anderson making up the rest of the committee.  Mrs Ellen Ellard was Secretary .  In a bold move they decided to shift the venue back to Egan Park that was within walking distance from the Railway Station and the main street as well as having more character than V.C. Mitchell Park.  This year saw the inaugural Highland Games come to Donnybrook with a pipe band, highland dancing and all the traditional events such as
tossing the caber, throwing the weight and shot putt were demonstrated.  Also the Southwest Shearing Classic and the Stihl W A Chain Saw Championship were organized.  The All Saints Anglican Church celebrated its 80th Anniversary during 1987. On Easter Sunday it was open all day for guided tours and a display of records and memorabilia. The church was constructed of Donnybrook Stone in 1907 and has a National Heritage listing. As always the Apple Queen contest was at the heart of the festival and nine girls vied for the title this year.
