The Donnybrook Apple Festival 1979

The 1979 Apple Festival was held as Donnybrook's major contribution to W .A. ' s 150th birthday celebrations. Apex again organized the festival, this year under the chairmanship of Brian Trigwell with Graeme Fry as secretary. Repeating the success of the previous year, the festival was held on the Saturday and Sunday while Monday saw a S.W.N.F.L. game played between Donnybrook and South Bunbury with the home team coming out easy winners. A record attendance of over 12,000 people watched the festival over the two days. Saturday started with motorbike riders showing their skill by riding over the top of an old Volkswagen car, balancing on a seesaw and riding standing up on the seat. The Perth Ladies Pipe Band gave a display then Mick Fry showed the modem way to pick apples with a Squirrel. He had planted a large tree in he oval and hundreds of apples had been attached to it for the display. At noon, the Leschenault Lady vintage train arrived just in time to see the float parade make its way through the main street to V.C. Mitchell Park. There were ten Apple Queens this year, each in their own float and the diversity of ideas made for a very colourful spectacle.
