The Donnybrook Apple Festival 1966

Bridgetown appointed a new president Don Russ to run their third festival. He was assisted by E. McKelvie as Secretary-Organizer assisted him. Local business houses excelled themselves by getting into the spirit of things and gaily decorating their premises to give the town a festive look. The Girl Guides took over Fisher Motors windows. One window featured a camping scene with trees and a campfire, two tents, wash cubicles, firewood shelter and a flagpole. The other window emphasized the international aspect of the movement with dolls dressed in the uniforms of many nations surrounding a huge world globe. This won them first prize in the window competition. The festival started on Good Friday night with the arrival of the Reso train fifteen minutes early. This marred the official reception for the visitors as there was nobody there to greet them but they were in plenty of time to attend a sacred concert featuring the Brookhampton Bell Ringers, the Bridgetown Ladies' Choir and the Naval Reserve Band. The concert was a sell-out and many people who were turned away spent their time examining the gaily decorated shop windows. On Saturday morning the apple handling competitions got under way in Wesfarmers packing shed and Marie Westlake won the apple packing section.

Hampton Street was closed between the Freemasons and Scott's Hotel. The Naval Reserve Band played, a puppet show was performed and the Musgroves Baton Twirlers put on a display of baton twirling. The Apex Club produced an amusing diversion with a tractor simulating a horse drawing a trailer labelled "Gee-Gee-Up Bush Fire Brigade" after the Geegeelup Brook that flows through the town. The brigade was called in to quell a fire started in the main Street by a "swaggie" boiling his billy. A great deal of water and effort went into the exercise and in the meantime the "swaggie" stole a wheel of the trailer. He was eventually shot and bled to death in a huge pool of tomato sauce!   (Courtesy of Doug Henderson's book "Apple Queens & Festivals")
